pricepainting

David Dufault paints what you think is the familiar-pastoral landscapes, a McDonald's® cheeseburger, Jesus-with provocative intent. A landscape harbors an abstract flag; another landscape is painted on the face of a dollar bill; the price of an everyday object is boldly stated above it, making you consider its value, especially in comparison to other familiar objects.

The Chicago Transit Authority series is an exploration of how a small change in a word or letters can recontextualize otherwise expected results. Dufault recreates the stop names with the same font and color of the original CTA stops with slight modifications to change them into food names. He limits himself by regulating the 'rules'; only a maximum of two letters can be changed or by adding a word.

In his PricePainting series, Dufault explores the dialogue that exists between the object, the price, and the value the price gives them. Purchasing a pet goldfish for 13 cents launched Dufault's reflection on how consumers choose what is fairly priced. You can purchase a living entity for a mere 13 cents, the same price as a package of KoolAid®, and considerably less than a painting by serial killer John Wayne Gacy: $700. A painting of that mind-etched image of a jumbo jet crashing into the World Trade Center on September 11 brazenly puts a price on the disaster: $54 billion. A Burberry® scarf: $202.

The preceding series, DollarVision, consists of landscapes painted on money. Because he imagined the dollar's border as looking like a frame around a stage or a window, Dufault said he wondered how it would look with a landscape inside of the frame, implying the worth of the land is at issue. The concept of worth, value, and price is probed in this series, about 30 paintings in all, and naturally led to PricePainting.

Dufault's FlagVision series, which lasted nearly three years, was hatched from a dream of office lights and streaks of red car taillights reflecting in the rain, conjuring up the image of the stars and stripes on the American flag. Dufault envisioned and then created the abstract flag pattern over and over within such images as rows of crops with criss-crossing sprinklers, shadows on snow, and beams of light through a window.
